GPS on my phone, thats going to be nice. I was thinking well google maps on my iPhone sort of sucks, so what will make this worth buying? After getting my copy of the app.
I sat down and played with all the features the app provided. I then realized that it straight blew google maps out of the water. I hurried up at 1:34 AM and went for a drive to test out what looked like a really cool app. I ended up driving around in my car for 2 hours this app was great.
I tried out so many POI’s and just tried to get my self lost. The app was very fast on locking into my location, the menus are extremely easy to navigate. I think this is a must have app for anyone who travels. I really thought the app would lag on making sharp turns, but as you can see in my video below, its right on the mark.
Also the sound pack for Sygic iPhone app was very understandable, and the maps took me right where I wanted to go. Other dash mount GPS units I’ve tested in the past, have taken me down the road of my destination but not to. The only trouble I had using POI’s was finding an AT&T store. May have been something I did wrong but everything else I looked for, was easy to find. All in all my impression of this app by Sygic is its amazing how fast and smooth it works. Im going to buy an iPhone window mount and just start using the Sygic Mobile maps app for my GPS from here on out, its more convenient and its a must have. Not necessary but could be a really cool feature, would be the ability to send your current location to your Twitter friends. One thing that may help push you current owners of normal dash mount GPS units to buy this: is if your out on the road allot you may have been a victim of a car break-ins where your GPS has been ripped out of your car.
In a situation like that your screwed, the only thing you can do is buy a map or a new GPS. No one these days really wants to drive across country using an old fashion map. We all have better things to waste our money on while on vacation or work, then having to buy a new dash mount GPS, because some punk took yours. So this is the kicker, you buy the iPhone app and now not only do you have your normal dash mount GPS that will get you from point A to B you will also have your Sygic iPhone app that will get you around town while at point A. See this app will allow you not to have to carry a big bulky dash unit around on your person while hanging out at a new restaurant or theme park.
You can leave it in the hotel room, or where ever your staying. By using this app it will make your trips much more enjoyable. Keep from getting lost! I have to be honest, I was expecting some inconsistency due to the fact that AT&T has not fully upgraded our area to 3g, but I was pleasantly surprised that the app functioned without difficulty over the much slower edge network. The important thing for me with a GPS is that it runs smooth and fast and this thing delivers.
Whether we were driving in the city or through the swamps we were unable to get lost with this app. Many advanced features built in such as lane assist and auto reroute. So if you miss a turn the software will get you in the right path again, although it does not let you know it is doing so. When you first load Mobile Maps you are taken to your location on the map bypassing the main menu screen; which is nice if your just driving around and decide to turn it on. On the edge network Mobile Maps was able to lock onto my location typically in under ten seconds. The colors on screen are vibrant and easy to see especially in landscape mode even when mounted to my dashboard. Hen navigating you can choose to enter the address you are looking for manually or choose from the millions of points of interest that come preloaded on this app.
The turn by turn directions and lane assist features let you know far enough in advance what exits to take or what lane you should stay in. The audio is also loud enough to be heard over the radio at a modest volume setting. My only complaints with the Mobile Maps is the absence of text to voice, and you are sometimes a little behind where you actually are on the map. The few small complaints that I have are really nitpicking when compared to how advanced this app really is. When compared to a garmin with similar features you cannot beat the $79.99 price tag with everything this app delivers.

As I am constantly glued to my iphone and my gps to survive in the world today, recently I had the opportunity to use Sygics Mobile Maps 2009 for the iphone. Well seeing as I still have the same garmin c330 that ive had for the past 3 years I think that its time to retire it. Unlike my old garmin, the first thing I noticed was how fast it locked on to my position. The cool thing is that the iphone uses a combination of the internal gps chip and your edge/3g connection so it managed to stay connected even in tight spots and underneath underpasses.
The application is very user friendly as it reminded me of my beloved garmin with its big buttons and simple interface. I also like that there are a handful of voices to choose from. As of right now im not sure if there are or will be more voice packs available for the software but that is a feature I would like to see in the future. The application is solid and stays connected no problems. All in all I plan on selling my old garmin and using that money to buy a good windshield mount for my iphone now! Add some funny voice packs like Tom Tom has and the ability to customize more such as other GPS sounds or perhaps the ability to put themes on and it would be perfect. What it boils down to, if you want GPS navigation software, this is the way to go.
